People (diversity, migration and participation)

  1. Every cluster of learners within the Digital Commonwealth Project is working on their own different project (specific to their community and school cluster), but everyone who participates is working under the four themes of the Digital Commonwealth project (place, people, culture and exchange) and will be carried out in the spirit of the principles of the Digital Commonwealth project. This exercise asks learners to explore the theme of "people" within the context of the audio workshop introduction.

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of independent and equal states that aims to influence international society in world peace, shared values and common principles for the benefit of all society. See the charter for more details the charter for more details. The people of the Commonwealth are culturally diverse, with a shared inheritance in language, all speak English as a working language, bound together by a shared history and tradition, but also celebrate diversity, difference and cultural advocacy for change. 50% of the people in the Commonwealth are under 25.

Split the learners into small teams and ask learners to think about their own project, then select some questions from the list below for the learners to explore:

    • Does your project celebrate people?
    • Is your project inclusive?
    • Does your project deal with issues of refugees or those with leave of absence to stay?
    • Has anyone in your family immigrated from or emigrated to another Commonwealth nation or territory?
    • Are you creating or developing a network to share your ideas and content or stories?
    • Does the project aim to create a force for good or social change?
    • What does friendship mean to you remember the Commonwealth Games are known as the Friendly Games - do you know why?
    • Are you part of a team?
    • What does it mean to be part of a team?
    • Think about what you would and would not participate in, in your community and ask yourself why?
  2. Remember that your group of learners may not know each other and may never have worked together before (many projects are part of transition initiatives for primary to secondary school), so mixing up the groups to share thoughts and experiences will be useful. Word prompts, such as those below might help:

  3. Learners should use whichever digital or analogue means they currently feel comfortable with to explore the given questions and work together to document the results as they go along (ensuring there is a mixture of creative tools available will help make a diverse range of results to display). Ask each group to share their thoughts with the rest of the class and encourage a conversation and reflection on the results. Trainers can refer back to the Teaching kit for Digital Commonwealth Themes to see how this fits in context with the other themes and workshops.

Discussion

This workshop relates to audio, how can learners use the materials produced in this task to help them with their wider project? Do users podcast or use audio in some way already at school?
